WORKING WITH ADULTS AND/OR CHILDREN? WHY TAKE THIS COURSE?

Due to demand, this course is now available as self study, live online or classroom based learning.  It would be of benefit to Therapists; Counsellors, Educators; Clergy; Movement Therapists, Mindfulness Teachers; Yoga Teachers; Nurses; Clinicians; Body workers;  Life Coaches; Mental Health Professionals including Social Workers; Midwives; Clinicians; Complementary Therapists/Practitioners; NLP, EMDR, Reiki, Havening, EFT; Hypnotherapists and anyone working with adults and children who are able to integrate trauma informed approaches within their 'scope of practice'.
It is vital for anyone working with adults or children's emotional issues  to have an in-depth understanding of trauma.  Over the years, psychiatry and the medical model have done nothing to improve depression, anxiety or  trauma related disorders, and in fact mental health disorders are on the rise.  Today though we can benefit from emerging best practices that are trauma informed and by including somatic techniques, there is now the potential to clear traumas without putting clients under distress or risk re-traumatising them.

As you may know, those who have experienced trauma, gone through it and managed to come out the other side, tend to be superb practitioners as they are not afraid of others' pain or distress, understand empathy and have the ability to just get what you're going through.

While trauma awareness is an essential first step in understanding trauma, being trauma informed takes the understanding (and the practitioner’s training) to the next level as it requires a comprehensive understanding of the neurobiology of trauma and its potential long-term consequences on physical, mental, and emotional well-being. If you add on top of that, an understanding of how somatic approaches play a part, and how to integrate  them, this takes your practice to the highest level.

A few of the positive comments that have come back:
*"This “Trauma Informed Somatic Training” from Helena of the EFT & Mindfulness Centre looks quite solid and well thought out. It promises a richer training than many trauma courses we've seen that lean heavily on theory and we like the lived experience of the trainer. The inclusion of somatic work is a strong plus and we like the flexibility of being able to take the self study course for free. Not all trauma trainings offer that. If anyone is serious about working in trauma (with clients), this seems like a legitimate option to us." Australian Counselling Profession
*"The course was very comprehensive and provides a detailed overview of different types of trauma and how this may present in your clients as well as various ways to consider treating different aspects of trauma. Helena is very welcoming and supportive. She clearly demonstrates a significant depth of knowledge and experience and inspires students to further their learning and develop their confidence in dealing with trauma, in order to provide a better informed and tailored service to individual clients."   Gemma
*" The course is really good value. It was a privilege to participate in the course. The standard of the course was outstanding and the presenter Helene has incorporated good quality resources and shared her experience and knowledge. Helene has the rare quality of being authentic and curious. Helene's' intelligence and genuiness shines through the content and presentation of the course. I have been recovering from illness , and had been previously unable to undertake the course .Helene supported me to attend the later course. I still had a severe headache and double vision. It was a joy to attend the course." Alison
*  “I highly recommend the Trauma-Informed Somatic Therapy Training provided by the EFT and Mindfulness Centre".  The combination of one year’s access to the online materials and the live virtual sessions provided both flexibility and depth. Helena Fone’s teaching was clear, compassionate, and practical.  I now feel more confident integrating somatic tools safely in both my professional work and personal life.”  Louise
*"Helena is such a font of information about trauma and somatics you will not be disappointed. I felt like I was in safe hands throughout. By signing up you not only receive the course information but also a wealth of valuable resources for future reference. Thank you Helena for holding the course it is much needed." Vanessa*"I enjoyed following the TIST course with Helena, most of all I liked the way she explains complex concepts with various examples, sharing also her vast personal and professional experience.  I can say that after years taking short CPD courses on Trauma, I finally managed through this course to understand  theories  and concepts around Trauma work such as Attachment, polyvagal and structural dissociation. This course gave me the tools to apply these theories to my day to day work with clients." Charmaine

This course IS for you if:

  • You want to take one course that comprehensively covers both trauma informed and somatic approaches instead of taking many small courses
  • You want to be able to identify different types of trauma and what may be narcissistic or personality traits
  • You have not been been trained in trauma informed somatic approaches before or you trained in them before 2010
  • You want to deepen your level of practice and expand your business
  • You like the idea of studying at your own pace
  • You work with (or may work with) adults, children and adolescents and want to know how to navigate your way around their trauma symptoms as well as depression and anxiety
  • You have clients who are having difficulty overcoming their symptoms of trauma
  • You want to move a clients' trauma from fragmentation to integration to post traumatic growth
  • You want to offer your clients the ability to heal in a powerful somatic way and offer them techniques they can use outside of sessions.
  • You like the idea of supervision being available and there will be an opportunity for skills practice
The course may NOT be for you if you are experiencing any of the following:
  • Struggling to process or move on from your own trauma
  • Experiencing disturbing memories or images
  • Constantly reliving the event or feel like it's happening in the present
  • Avoiding places, people or activities that remind you of the event
  • Having difficulty functioning properly
  • Find yourself occasionally triggered
  • Recognise that you need personal therapy before embarking on the course.
In such circumstances, we strongly advise you work on your own personal issues first.
It goes without saying that anyone taking part in this course takes responsibility for their own wellbeing and working within their 'scope of practice'.

If you're still not sure, can you answer the following:
  • What are the subtle signs that you may have retraumatised a client?
  • How would you recognise the key characteristics of psychological trauma?
  • How would you adapt to ensure an appropriate trauma response is implemented?
  • What is the relationship between interoceptive awareness and PTSD?
  • How do you know if a client is dissociating, do you know how to prevent it if they are and should they dissociate?
  • What are the hidden symptoms of developmental trauma in a child?
  • Should a client talk about their trauma?
  • How do you recognise when affect regulation is failing?
  • What model would you follow for attachment trauma?
  • What are the key signs of developmental trauma and how does it differentiate from C-PTSD?
  • What is somatic therapy and how can you use it to help heal trauma?
  • When should you use ‘top down’ or ‘bottom up’ approaches?
  • How do early attachment disorders contribute to adult trauma?
  • Can you recognise the vagal states and how to work with them?
  • Do you know what can be dangerous to do in a session?
  • Do you have techniques to help clients remain in their ‘window of tolerance’
  • Are there times when you should not empathise with your client?

ABOUT THE COURSE CREATOR

As a Psychotherapist who has  trained in many mind body healing practices since the mid 1990's,  written EFT and MBCT training programmes as well as running a busy clinical practice since 1998, I believe I have a wealth of clinical and training experience.  I am also in demand as a guest speaker and advisor.   More importantly, I am one of the 1.3% to have an ACE score of 7 and have healed from those traumas (though recognising there is still 'work in progress'.)  I am anticipating that my own experiences will be an invaluable asset to anyone attending this course.
It's hard to believe when I trained as a psychotherapist in the 1990's, trauma was only touched upon and somatic approaches were not even mentioned. As I was working through my own traumas, I soon began to realise I wasn't fully equipped to help some clients. I once said something to a client with dissociative tendencies and she left and didn't return so I learned the hard way.
As a result, I embarked on various trauma courses with experts in the field of trauma and studied somatic therapies. That is why I  was the first to introduce Parts Therapy and trauma safety protocols into the EFT training programme; but of course this doesn't provide the in-depth knowledge required to work safely and ethically with trauma.  If you are already familiar with my training, you will know that I'm thorough and everything is very well researched and from reliable sources.  I also include anecdotes from some client sessions as well as some of my own experiences.
I strongly believe in transparency, accountability and affordability so I am more than happy to answer any questions that you can't find answers to on here.  I have also made this certification available to those who are not trained in somatic therapies as the principles of the trauma informed content can also be applied.
