FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS; DO I NEED SUPERVISION? Supervision shouldn't be a chore and we don't want to make it so. However, if you're one of my students and practicing, you have a duty to keep up with supervision or run risks (see below). If you are accredited with the EFT & Mindfulness Centre it is a mandatory requirement to gather supervision in order to retain accreditation.
If you need any other encouragement, you will find my fees are much less than most other supervision classes.
Any reputable training school will ask you to sign to Codes of Conduct that includes supervision and CPD. I The EFT & Mindfulness Centre asks for accredited members to agree to their Ethical Framework Document. If supervision is ignore then some of the risks include:
Losing your accreditation
Practicing as a Practitioner or Trainer in a unconsciously incompetent manner ("we don't know what we don't know" basically). This can lead to harm towards your client
Having a complaint made against you
Your insurance and any claims being invalidated
WHAT IS SUPERVISION? It is important that a supervisee comes to an agreed understanding with their supervisor about what supervision means.
Supervision is NOT therapy….although it may involve a Practitioner’s personal experiences. If a need develops from the Supervision session, it would be wise to schedule in a separate appointment, or signpost to another therapist.
Supervision CAN count towards CPD but CPD cannot be counted towards supervision.
Supervision is a working alliance between supervisor and supervisee in which the supervisee has time and space to reflect on themselves and their work, to be given feedback, and any relevant, guidance. Its purpose is to maximize competence as well as to give help and support.
For clients it means:
Practitioners do no harm
Practitioner possesses sufficient skills
Practitioners are up to date with new skills, techniques and legislations (GDPR for example)
For the Supervisee, it helps them understand:
What may be getting in the way of making progress
How to work with integrity
Awareness of change within and without.
How to explore and manage their own conflicts
What new techniques can enhance your work
Keeping healthy boundaries
Working within legislation
Professional ethics .......and much much more
WHAT TYPES OF SUPERVISION ARE THERE? Given below is an explanation of the different types of supervision we can offer. You can choose one or more that suit you.
The EFT & Mindfulness Centre recommends a mixture of 1:1 and small (6 or less) in Group Supervision to meet the criteria to remain accredited.
Peer supervision is on an equal basis for mutual develop and support. Ideally, all participants in the group will have comparable knowledge, skill level and status (all practitioners or all trainers).
Group supervision differs from peer supervision, as it has a leader or facilitator who is often an experienced Practitioner or Trainer who can co-ordinate the group, support confidentiality and keep the group on task, utilising the time most effectively for all. Participation can help with the exchange of professional knowledge (what works, what doesn’t), development of strong skills in managing professional problems, reducing personal and professional stress and increase professionalism within their work. The group leader or facilitator will enable all participants to have opportunities to engage, rather than any single 'strong' or 'weak' individual, as may happen with peer supervision. Participating in a group can also counteract social isolation and gain the advantages of working in a cohesive, collaborative and supportive fashion.
Individual (1-to-1) supervision is the most flexible, as you and your supervisor/trainer can organise the session according to your own needs, whether it is discussing current cases, future cases, past training, future training, professional development, personal impact of therapy, or aspects relating to business management and development. There are a number of benefits from individual supervision:
Confidentiality in discussing client cases or personal concerns
Recognising burnout, transference and counter-transference
Practice in supportive skills, such as active listening
Enhanced awareness of operating in a professional and ethical way, including boundaries
Help increase confidence and competence
Opportunity to raise personal issues, doubts, or insecurities in a confidential environment
Review of work-life perspective
SUPERVISION CAN BE TAKEN ONLINE OR IN A LIVE SETTING. THERE ARE ADVANTAGES TO BOTH FORMATS.
SUPERVISION VIA ZOOM
If you haven’t used Zoom before, don’t be put off as it’s just like Skype except quality of calls are much better and it doesn't cost you anything. Your host has paid the subscription fee. Here's how to begin:
Install Zoom and accept any invite to be added to contacts. This is very helpful so don't miss this.
Check you have good quality speakers (headphones and external microphone are optional). Please test these out beforehand. Test your speakers
You will be sent an invite via Email and all you do is click on that link at the scheduled time.
Supervision need not be expensive and I have set the fee to be affordable for everyone. Supervision can be counted towards CPD but CPD cannot be counted towards Supervision.
HOW TO PREPARE FOR THE ZOOM MEETING
Once your payment has been received you will receive confirmation by email with details of how to join in
Each attendee is asked to submit at least one question or Case Study for discussion. If you have not sent any questions in advance, please bring with you but be prepared they may not be included.
Have pen and paper & water ready
Supervision is not therapy. If issues come up during the class, you will have the opportunity to explore avenues.
